Despite their desirable properties, the lack of good interfacial adhesion between fibers and matrix, low melting point, and water sensitivity make the use of natural fiber-reinforced composites less attractive. Surface roughness can be increased and moisture absorption is decreased by surface modification of natural fibers. Various methods have been explored in order to improve the compatibility between hydrophilic natural fibers and hydrophobic polymer matrices. Most of the chemical surface treatments of natural fibers involve silylation, acetylation, benzoylation, isocyanate treatment and polymer grafting. Although these treatments can alter the wettability of natural fibers, the appropriate handling and disposal of the large amounts of hazardous chemicals that is often involved is unattractive and an additional cost to the production. Surface modification of natural fibers by alternative green methods may surpass the chemical treatments. Efforts are now being focused on environmentally friendly methods to increase the compatibility between natural fibers and polymer matrices. This book comprehensively addresses surface modification of natural fibers to make them more effective, cost-efficient, and environmentally friendly. Topics include the elucidation of important aspects surrounding chemical and green approaches for the surface modification of natural fibers, the use of recycled waste, properties of biodegradable polyesters, methods such as electrospinning, and applications of hybrid composite materials., In a recent push for environmentally friendly materials, many designers have turned to natural fibers because of their low-density, nonabrasive, combustible, nontoxic, low-cost, and biodegradable properties. However, despite these desirable attributes, the lack of good interfacial adhesion between fibers and matrix, low melting point, and water sensitivity make the use of natural fiber-reinforced composites less attractive. Though surface modification of the natural fibers can increase their surface roughness and decrease moisture absorption, this process often involves large amounts of hazardous chemicals, for which the handling and disposal are unattractive and costly. Surface modification of natural fibers by alternative green methods may surpass the chemical treatments. Efforts are now being focused on environmentally friendly methods to increase the compatibility between natural fibers and polymer matrices. Biodegradable Green Composites covers both chemical and green surface modifications of natural fibers to make them as effective, cost-efficient, and environmentally friendly as possible. Topics include: Important aspects surrounding chemical and green approaches for the surface modification of natural fibers, The use of recycled waste, Properties of biodegradable polyesters, Methods such as electrospinning, Applications of hybrid composite materials, With the coverage of scientific, technological, and practical concepts concerning the research, development, and realization of green composite materials, this book is at the forefront of the structural engineering materials field and will prove a valuable resource for scientists, engineers, and chemists across multiple fields. Why do millions still believe the vague doggerel that Nostradamus passed off as prophecy?Drew is desperate to turn everything over to the academic community, and in the process redeem himself in the eyes of his estranged wife, but Kadir and Zafer are only interested in what they can get for the scrolls on the black market. In this book a noted historian describes the French college of the ancien régime and tells how it withstood crises of dissolution and reconstruction, dispersion of teachers and students, academic radicalism, loss of endowments, war, inflation, and political terror, to emerge in 1808 as a key element in Napoleon's Imperial University.H & ffe confronts what he sees as the two major challenges to any theory of justice: the legal, positivist claim that there are no standards of justice external to legal systems; and the anarchist claim that justice demands the rejection and abolition of all legal and state systems.
